Created by the team behind Ascend WV, First Ascent is a two-year community and career development program that helps recent graduates launch meaningful careers, build lasting connections, and create a life they love in West Virginia.
Program funding originated from WVU Provost Reed’s Innovation Summit, with additional funds provided by the Coalfield Development’s EDA Build Back Better Regional Challenge Grant and a $25 million gift from the Wing-2-Wing Foundation. Through mentorship, professional development, and community engagement, the program represents a commitment to West Virginia’s future workforce.

Eliza Siefert Shares Her Personal Experiences With First Ascent
The best way to learn about the opportunities First Ascent provides is by hearing from a program member. Eliza Siefert, a West Virginia native and a First Ascent member, shared what the program has meant to her.
“For me, leaving college was a little difficult. I went from a community with all my friends to almost feeling alone,” she shared in a post on the First Ascent blog. “It’s important to try to find a niche in your community that you can fit into. Get involved with the First Ascent and Ascend West Virginia programs as well as outside community organizations.”
Eliza’s experience with First Ascent gave her a sense of belonging after college that helped her find a place to call home in West Virginia. You can learn more about the program, including member benefits, on the First Ascent WV official website.
