People sit with their hands stacked on top of each other.

Driven by a shared commitment to fostering opportunity and innovation, the Wing 2 Wing Foundation approached 2024 with a dynamic blend of impactful initiatives, community-building events, and forward-thinking programs. Co-founded by Brad D. Smith and his wife, Alys, the foundation continued to empower underserved communities, elevate local economies, and champion education and entrepreneurship throughout Appalachia and beyond.

Transforming Communities Through Key Programs

In 2024, the Wing 2 Wing Foundation remained steadfast in its mission to create transformative opportunities across Appalachia. By launching and expanding programs that address critical challenges, the foundation continued to empower individuals and communities. From fostering leadership among young professionals to supporting women leaders and revitalizing local economies, these key programs exemplify the foundation’s commitment to driving meaningful change. Below, we highlight the initiatives that have left an indelible mark on the region and its people.

Ascend WV, one of the foundation’s flagship initiatives, played a pivotal role in revitalizing West Virginia communities in 2024. By attracting remote workers to the Mountain State through financial incentives, professional support, and lifestyle enhancements, Ascend WV has become a model for regional economic development. Participants are drawn not only by West Virginia’s natural beauty but also by the strong sense of community fostered through the program’s mentorship and networking opportunities. With ongoing support from the Wing 2 Wing Foundation, Ascend WV has expanded to include innovative programs in a number of ways, including:

  • Opioid Response Efforts: In partnership with the West Virginia First Foundation, the Wing 2 Wing Foundation supported opioid response efforts through Ascend WV. This initiative aims to tackle the opioid crisis by integrating innovative solutions and community-driven programs, ensuring a healthier future for West Virginia families.
  • Ascend WV Regional Engagement: Brad and Alys Smith personally visited Elkins, West Virginia, in March 2024 to discuss the Ascend WV program. This visit highlighted the program’s regional impact and its role in attracting remote workers while fostering economic and community development. By engaging directly with local stakeholders, they reinforced their commitment to building stronger ties within the Mountain State.
  • The Ascend WV Homebuyer Program: Launched in collaboration with Marshall University and West Virginia University, the Ascend WV Homebuyer Program helps remote workers transition into permanent residents by offering $12,000 to those who purchase a home as their primary residence in the Mountain State. This initiative strengthens community roots and promotes long-term economic stability across the region.

As of September 2024, Ascend WV has received more than 55,000 applications and welcomed over 400 new residents hailing from 44 states and seven countries. The program is on pace to have 1,000 remote workers as members within the next three years.

First Ascent

Celebrating its second year, First Ascent empowered young professionals with leadership development workshops, career navigation tools, and a robust mentorship network. These continued efforts positioned participants for success in remote and hybrid work environments while fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment.

Women Warriors Summit

Headlined by Alys Smith and supported by the Wing 2 Wing Foundation, the Women Warriors Summit continued to expand its reach and impact in 2024. With over 750 attendees, the summit brought together women leaders across industries to share their stories, build connections, and inspire the next generation of trailblazers.

Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative (OEDC)

Through a robust partnership with Ascend WV, the foundation’s ongoing collaboration with the OEDC drew more remote workers to West Virginia’s picturesque landscapes. This initiative revitalized local communities, sparked economic growth, and positioned the Mountain State as a premier destination for professionals seeking both career and lifestyle opportunities.

In 2024, the Wing 2 Wing Foundation introduced new programs and expanded existing ones to deepen its impact throughout the state. These programs spanned various social and educational initiatives.

Youth Empowerment and Education

In 2024, the Wing 2 Wing Foundation elevated its commitment to youth empowerment through transformative initiatives designed to address systemic barriers to education and opportunity. The foundation awarded over 150 scholarships to underserved students—removing financial hurdles to higher education—and introduced mentorship programs connecting students with leaders in technology, healthcare, and entrepreneurship for guidance and inspiration.

The foundation also piloted a STEM education program in rural areas, providing advanced classroom resources to spark interest in science and technology. In partnership with local schools, Wing 2 Wing hosted interactive workshops and career fairs, showcasing possibilities in emerging fields. These efforts underscore the foundation’s mission to uplift communities by creating pathways to higher education and opportunity. A few highlights include:

  • Funding for Classroom Supplies: In a significant act of support for local education, the Wing 2 Wing Foundation, in partnership with DonorsChoose, donated $175,000 to West Virginia classrooms to provide essential school supplies. This funding ensured that teachers and students had access to the resources needed for a successful academic year, demonstrating the foundation’s unwavering commitment to empowering educators and fostering learning environments where students can thrive.
  • Supporting Musical Education: In May 2024, the Wing 2 Wing Foundation contributed $280,000 to the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, in partnership with the Save The Music Foundation, to expand the instrument rebuild project in West Virginia middle schools—ultimately reaching all 55 counties over the next three years.
  • Operation HOPE Partnership: In March 2024, the Wing 2 Wing Foundation donated $1,000,000 to Operation HOPE’s 1865 Project, a nationwide initiative aimed at closing the racial wealth gap. This partnership expands HOPE’s financial coaching and small business support in underserved areas of West Virginia—particularly Huntington’s Fairfield community—at no cost to participants.

“The Wing 2 Wing Foundation is committed to leveling the playing field of opportunity, and financial literacy is essential to uplifting all communities,” said Brad D. Smith. “We are proud to partner with Operation HOPE as they continue to cultivate financial wellness and prosperity for all.”

Venture Portfolio Expansion

The Wing 2 Wing Foundation’s venture portfolio grew significantly in 2024, furthering its commitment to supporting innovative startups and social enterprises. Through strategic investments and mentorship, the foundation backed ventures focused on sectors such as sustainable agriculture, healthcare technology, and renewable energy. These efforts align with the foundation’s mission to foster economic development and entrepreneurship in underserved regions.

Celebrating West Virginia Achievements

2024 was also marked by the inspiring ascent of West Virginia native Emily Calandrelli into space, an achievement partially funded by the Wing 2 Wing Foundation. This milestone highlights the foundation’s dedication to supporting groundbreaking endeavors that inspire future generations.

A Year of Growth & Gratitude

As the Wing 2 Wing Foundation reflects on a year filled with milestones, its leadership remains steadfast in its mission to create lasting change.

“Empowering others to achieve their dreams is at the heart of what we do,” shared Brad D. Smith. “2024 has been a testament to what’s possible when we come together to invest in people and communities.”

Looking ahead, the foundation is poised for an even greater impact in 2025, with plans to scale its programs and deepen its engagement with the communities it serves.
